Richardson’s Jersey Royals are hand-picked onto two side belts on a specially developed potato harvester where fresh potable water is applied to the surface of the hand-picked potatoes to “dissolve” the soil away from the potatoes very delicate skins within seconds of being lifted. The amount of water jets, speed of conveyance, velocity etc successfully determined to leave the skin almost entirely intact whereupon an operator on the harvester applies generous amounts of Coir as the potatoes fill shallow bale crates prior to transport via purpose built insulated trailer to our packing facility.
The advantage with the ‘’washing and Coir coating’’ of the potatoes at lifting and subsequent heat-sealing of the specially lined paper bags is that it not only increases, but also extends the freshness within the packs. By using very dry Coir, the moisture on the potatoes is absorbed into the-all encasing material and the skins delicacy is further maintained. There is also a cushioning effect when the potatoes are gently graded as Coir is inherently softer and less abrasive than soil. The washing and application of Coir ensures a consistent product appearance regardless of field conditions.
Customers pick up the bags in the knowledge that the quality is consistent. The consumer finds the potatoes much easier to prepare prior for cooking and the moistened skin rubs off easily if desired. The whole process ensures the very freshest Jersey Royals possible and has established Richardson’s Jersey Royals as Britain’s most prestigious new potato.
Richardson’s system is totally unique in the World and is certainly the ultimate system to deliver top quality new potatoes to market. As all the phytosanitary requirements are fully met, European sales are now possible, and Richardson’s are keen to work with the CHA to further promote the best of British produce.
